So, these last couple of weeks have been pretty crazy! With the death of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breona Taylor, and the false police report of Christian Cooper I was totally thrown off my game. My heart was grieved. Actually, it’s still grieved but I’m also hopeful. Hopeful that all these tragedies may actually lead to the change we need in our country. Now, I’m an unapologetic Christian and although I know God didn’t cause all this I can’t help but think He allowed it just for this moment. Just for the world to see and act on the injustice many brown folks see daily. My prayer truly is that we continue to see and work towards changing it and bringing justice to our land.
But that’s not what I want to talk about! With all that’s been going on I was totally thrown off my usual game. I realized I needed to get back to the basics and actually practice what I preach. So, I wanted to take you guys along with me!
The basics for me are getting back to some simple practices that help me move forward and get things done in life! There are simple things that allow me to “Win by Practice”- the third part of the TripleP Framework. The TripleP Framework is a three-part system that allows you to build a life that you want to live, set goals that get you closer to that dream life, and then implement practices that allow you to win.
So back to the basics for me! Three practices for winning I’m restarting are:
- Re-evaluating my Dream Week
- Processing my thoughts with the Clear Mind Process
- Hunkering down on my Routines
Let’s walk through these three practices!
A Dream Week is a way to set your whole life up week by week to win! This is where you can design your week to optimize hitting goals and making progress towards the life you want to live. The Dream Week is a template where you assign certain everyday tasks to specific days and times and use that as your guide for life every week. Now, of course life is different every single day but when you set up a template from which to live it makes it so much easier to win!
Processing your thoughts with the Clear Mind Process
One thing I find that helps me stay focused is having a clear mind! I learned of this technique from David Allen’s Getting Things Done Method and made it my own a while ago but have I been using it? Nope and it shows! So, let’s get back to the basics with this Clear Mind process. Here’s a quick run-down of what I do:
- Get a stack of paper
- Write one thing that is on your mind on each piece of paper (a task, a phone call, etc.)
- Once you can think of nothing else, go back to the beginning of the stack and assess each thing:
- What’s the next simplest step you need to take?
- Need time to do it? SCHEDULE IT! Write as much detail in the calendar appointment as possible so when it pops up you know exactly what you need to do
- Can you do it in 2 minutes or less? Do you have time to do it now? DO IT!
- Put all of the tasks in your task manager with appropriate due dates
- Go on about your day!
- What’s the next simplest step you need to take?
It’s good to do this type of thing on a regular basis- weekly if possible!
Hunkering down on my Routines!
Routines are your best friends! They allow you to get a lot done without even having to think! People think I’m a morning person and although I like working early in the morning what really makes my morning is that I don’t have to think. My routine makes it so that thinking is just not a thing for me and its beautiful! Haha!
Here’s an example of my current morning routine:
- Wake up
- 10-minute stretch routine
- Prayer/Bible Reading
- Get ready for work
- Read a leadership book
- Start work
Now my handy little Fitbit vibrates every time I need to go to the next thing so thinking is optional! All I do is move to the next item on the list and progress happens just because my routine incorporates the things I deem most important (relationship with God, my health, and getting to work on time haha!). Try putting together a routine for yourself and see how things change!
So, here’s to practicing what I preach! Will you join me in getting back to the basics? What’s something you need to get back to doing in this season? Do you want to take up one of my key practices?
I’d love to help you set up these simple practices in your life as well. Go ahead and schedule a Discovery Call with me if you’re interested!
